Event Description:

Completing the I-9 Form is a free class being offered by SDEA and the San Diego Workforce Partnership.

USCIS replaced the 2013 version of form I-9 in November of 2016.  The new Form I-9 is different than previous versions with new instructions, electronic assistance, and extra data fields.  Even if you have been completing the I-9s for some time, these changes are significant enough to justify training on the latest version of the form.  A new Employers Handbook was also published in January 2017 to address the changes and review acceptable documents.

During the presentation, Attorney Sharon Mehlman will guide you through the new form line by line and then answer any questions that you may have about the changes. Note that if you are using an electronic I-9 system, the I-9 vendors should be aware of the change and will be working on the new form for the electronic process.  However, if the new form is not ready for your electronic system, you should be prepared to use paper forms in the interim.

As a reminder, the new Form I-9 is required for all new hires (you are not required to redo the I-9s for existing employees) and for any rehires or re-verifications when you would normally use section 3.  There is a Spanish version of the form; however, that is only approved for use in Puerto Rico.
