Event Description:
In passing AB 2053, California is the third of five states in the U.S. to pass a law regarding workplace bullying (or what AB 2053 refers to as abusive conduct).
AB 2053 simply requires mandatory sexual harassment training to include a discussion of abusive conduct. Now that this phrase is floating around your workplace, how will you and managers discern between harassment and bullying? What happens if someone claims they are a target of abusive conduct? And did you know that because AB 2053 includes malice in its definition, that managers could be accused of abusive conduct when giving performance evaluations?
AB 2053 is not a moment too soon, because according to a recent study by CareerBuilder, 35% of the workforce encounters bullies at work. Workplace bullying is systematic psychological abuse that degrades and humiliates, and causes anxiety, depression, burnout, and lower levels of job satisfaction in targets and bystanders. Behaviors include frequent yelling, manipulation of work, nasty emails, social isolation, and a host of others. If allowed to flourish, it causes increased turnover, communication breakdown, reduced quality in work and poor customer service.
This session will take you through the process of developing effective strategies for dealing with workplace bullying and provide a step-by-step guide for building a healthy workplace where employees can thrive. At the end of this session, attendees will be able to:
  • Describe the social system of bullying, how to define it, and bullying behaviors
  • Describe damage caused to targets, bystanders, and the organization in order to make a business case for ending it
  • Definitively describe differences and similarities between workplace harassment, violence and bullying
  • Talk to and coach employees who have had a challenging interaction with a co-worker
  • Immediately implement simple action items that will begin the process of ending workplace bullying
  • Create an action plan to build a positive and respectful workplace culture
This Roundtable will be facilitated by Catherine Mattice with Civility Partners.  You can learn more about Catherine at www.CivilityPartners.com.
