Event Description:
Job accommodations come in many shapes and sizes.  Most employers realize the need to make accommodations for medical reasons but what about religion, sexual orientation or identification or family-related issues?  This program will discuss what an “undue hardship” really means, the importance of communication, employer legal requirements, how to document and the legal obligations of the interactive process.

Barbara Elliott brings over 25 years of highly specialized expertise in the areas of disability management.  She has been successfully facilitating the interactive process for employers since the inception of the ADA and subsequent Amendment Acts, and the more broad California FEHA.  Barbara utilizes an extensive range of occupational knowledge to identify accommodation options in support of performance of the essential job functions.  In addition to her lengthy consulting services, she has led the disability management practices at two of San Diego’s largest publicly held companies.   The depth of her experience includes establishing integrated processes for disability and leave management by weaving together the complex requirements under both  workers’ comp and non-occupational absences; mandated and company policy leaves; stay at work and return to work practices; employee benefits, etc. Barbara currently provides consulting support for employers, and serves as a trainer, speaker, and expert witness in disability-related employment litigation.
